RENU was born on 14th Day of January 2006, at an inception workshop held at Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel in Entebbe, where the Vice Chancellors and CEOs of selected higher education and research institutions met and resolved to create the Research and Education Network of Uganda (RENU) as a vehicle to enhance collaboration amongst their institutions in pursuit of their identical core mission: to provide a better education and research environment geared towards the development of Uganda. RENU brings together public and private research and higher education institutions in Uganda whose core mission is to provide a better education and research environment geared towards the development of the country. The motivation is to collectively address the face similar challenges we face, through a collaborative approach. The pioneer members of RENU include 1. Makerere University 2. Mbarara University of Science and Technology 3. Kyambogo University 4. Gulu University 5. Uganda Martyrs University, Nkonzi 6. Mbarara University of Science and Technology 7. Uganda Christian University, Mukono 8. Islamic University in Uganda, Mbale 9. The National Agricultural Research Organisation, (NARO) 10. Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) 11. Entebbe Virus Research Institute 12. Centre for Basic Research, Kampala
Main tasks agreed then were to: 1. Promote and facilitate research and education networking among Uganda Universities and Research organizations. 2. Create stronger negotiating positions and get better terms of participating organizations in dealing with: · Government and Regulators on issues related to policy and regulations vis a vis research and educational organizations; · Suppliers of hardware, software, online resources, and bandwidth, including getting benefits arising out of economies of scale; · Development partners on issues of common benefit; · Inter-connecting with other research and education networks worldwide. · E-learning systems to help deliver common online course; · Library information systems that allow us to easily digitize and share our collections. 4. Explore new avenues for other value-added services as may from time to time be needed in support of higher education and research networking in Uganda. Read more
